The king and queen quickly cover up Mare's anomaly by presenting her to the rest of the Silvers as a long-lost princess and betroth her to their second-born son. Now Mare is torn between playing the part of a Silver, and helping out the Scarlet Guard rebellion. The story has touches of the usual dystopian suspects. Very enjoyable if a little derivative

Mare Barrow is a Red. In Norta, this means that she's a normal human being, poor, and needs to scrape a living for herself and her family through thieving and general servitude. Reds are seen as the lowest of the low by Silvers, who have magical abilities that are highly esteeemed in the country. Mare and her family and friends despise Silvers, who treat Reds like dirt and have Reds fight an unending war with a neighboring country for them.

When circumstances for Mare send her right into the path of royals, she ends up discovering that she has magic abilities - and thus, is made a noble who is set to marry the second of two princes so that the reigning royal family can keep an eye on her. Meanwhile, an uprising is gathering through the country, and Mare has to figure out who she is and where her loyalties lie.

This one was hard to review because on one hand, I found the story very compelling, but on the other hand, there were lots of little things that I just couldn't get into. I've broken them down below.

Things That Frustrated Me:

The heroine: my biggest frustration with this book was the lack of character development in Mare. I didn't feel like I went on a journey with her as a character at all - she was kind of sassy and funny, and she clearly had some cool abilities...but that was it for me. I didn't feel like I knew her at all by the end of the book because she was the same person the entire way through. That was hard for me to connect with.

The romance: There were (count 'em) THREE love interests for Mare in this book. None of them really go anywhere big, but it just felt like every friggin guy in the book was into her. The hardest part about that is that there is an obvious choice - I genuinely thought that one guy was better than the others, and that just makes for a love triangle (or square?) that's unsatisfying.

The writing and the "I've Read This Before" feeling: There would be moments that I was really into the writing and then I would get pulled out of it by just a few too many cliches. Here are some examples:

"I'm standing on the balcony a full ten seconds before I realize it's raining, washing me clean of my boiling anger."

To me, this is just obvious writing - because there could have been a better description of the character's anger or the rain or just the fact that she was being cooled down by the rain...but it just ends up lost in cliche.

"This is the world I'm trying to bring down, the world trying to kill me and everything I care about...I've never felt smaller than I do now, with the great bridge looming above us. It looks ready to swallow me whole."

Again, the writing feels very obvious. I feel like I've read this line before - "bring down" "never felt smaller" "swallow me whole" - it feels a little tired.

The tropes: The problem with obvious writing is that if you have a story hat relies on a lot of tropes (poor girl who's special and different; prince who is not thrilled about being prince and just wants to be normal, world that is separated into classes that needs to be overthrown), you can guess what's going to happen, and your mind tends to wander. And because of that, every scene starts to feel predictable, and you notice every trope for what it is, instead of the trope extending beyond just a trope. It's frustrating because I couldn't help but notice and compare this book to a ton of other YA books (I thought of The Selection, Divergent, Hunger Games, even Harry Potter while I was reading), and the book never went beyond or did anything better or different with those tropes.

Things I Liked:

The world-building and concept: I liked how the Silvers and Reds were divided and how there was hierarchy even among the Silvers - there were higher and lower houses and they each had distinctive features. I enjoyed getting into this world through Mare's eyes - as a Red, she really doesn't know much about it, and it's both interesting to see it develop and to see her thoughts on it in her unique position.

The princes: There are two, and they are both interested in Mare romantically. To me it felt very obvious who the superior prince was, but I liked that they were well-rounded and different enough that they kept me guessing on their true natures. I felt like I knew more about them than I did about Mare by the end of the book.

Julian, the elderly wizard Silver who has Mare's best interests at heart and is awesome: This is a classic fantasy trope, but damned if I didn't really like Aveyard's version of the mentor. I especially liked the detail of how his skin was like the parchment that he read so much of, his abilities, and his secretiveness about his own life.

The villains and layered secondary characters: I'm not going to tell you who the villains are because that's complicated, but I liked how many of them there were, and how much they all influenced and encroached on Mare's life. I also liked how a lot of the characters in the novel weren't all black-and-white - some of the people who were supposed to be "good" weren't exactly the nicest or best people, and EVERYONE in the novel lied in order to get what they wanted. It's a dark view of life, but it worked.

The fast pace and the action: This is probably the first fantasy book I've read in a long time that I haven't put down because it had too much exposition or description and not enough action. The action scenes are pretty explosive, and the pacing moves quickly to bring the action to head.

The Final Word:

Red Queen is a very enjoyable, if derivative, fantasy read. Brimming with action and classic speculative fiction tropes, this is a good book for younger teens new to fantasy or looking for a book with magic to devour like popcorn. I wanted more depth in writing and character, but there's no doubt that I had fun while reading.

O the feels!!!

O the feels!!! Reading this for the second time around was a blast. I took my time somewhat and well I am just in love with this book as I was the first time. The society that Mare lives in is so breath taking and the story pulls you in that you just can't help to love it! I spent most of the book yelling NO NO DONT TRUST HIM!!! If you have read this book you know who I'm talking about.

The ending of this still blew my mind even knowing what was going to happen. This is one of the few books that although I did kinda think what happened was going to happen. It didn't have me sold on the idea. So in the end it was still a really good/bad surprise. (sorry trying not to spoil anything)

I really can't wait for book two which I'm starting right after I post this. (currently its May 26th if your wondering)

Not Hunger Games. Not Graceling. Very Meh.

The thing that was missing from this book was detail. The scenes and the characters were never set up where I could gather what the people or the land looked like. It seemed as though the setting and time frame was from an era where there was no modern inventions, but then all of the sudden there was cameras and large TVS where people were made to fight (for some reason that was tried to be explained other than coming out and calling it the Hunger Games).

I also just couldn't grasp the plot. You could tell where the book was going to end just because the character build up made it painstakingly obvious. I also didn't care for the protagonist in the story - Mare. Probably because of poor character development.

I finished this book and it made me roll my eyes. I read it because I saw a review where the reviewer compared this book to the likes of Graceling. It was not at all like Graceling.

seems like a great buy

At first glance, seems like a great buy. Learn how to use different kanji for the situation hand. But then, realize after buying it, no explaination sometimes when only two or more kanji are listed, without any explanation differentiating them!?
In these cases, you know there are alternatives, but you must look up the differences in another dictionary.
My copy is sitting unused as a result.

About the Author
Carol Ann Tomlinson s career as an educator includes 21 years as a public school teacher. She taught in high school, preschool, and middle school, and worked with heterogeneous classes as well as special classes for students identified as gifted and students with learning difficulties. Her public school career also included 12 years as a program administrator of special services for advanced and struggling learners. She was Virginia s Teacher of the Year in 1974. She is professor of educational leadership, foundations, and policy at the University of Virginia s Curry School of Education; a researcher for the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented; a codirector of the University of Virginia s Summer Institute on Academic Diversity; and president of the National Association for Gifted Children. Special interests throughout her career have included curriculum and instruction for advanced learners and struggling learners, effective instruction in heterogeneous settings, and bridging the fields of general education and gifted education. She is author of over 100 articles, book chapters, books, and other professional development materials, including How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms, The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, Leadership for Differentiated Schools and Classrooms, the facilitator s guide for the video staff development sets called Differentiating Instruction, and At Work in the Differentiated Classroom, as well as a professional inquiry kit on differentiation. She works throughout the United States and abroad with teachers whose goal is to develop more responsive heterogeneous classrooms.

Kay Brimijoin is currently associate professor and chair of the Education Department at Sweet Briar College in central Virginia, where she helped launch a master s program in differentiated curriculum and instruction and teaches courses on curriculum and instruction, assessment, literacy development, and student teaching. After 20 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience and school administration, Brimijoin completed her PhD in educational psychology with concentrations in gifted education and curriculum and instruction at the University of Virginia. She has received awards on curriculum design, research and evaluation, and distinguished dissertation work from the National Association for Gifted Children. She co-authored "The Differentiated School" in 2008 (ASCD) and a unit in "Differentiation in Practice: Grades 9-12 i"n 2005 (ASCD). Brimijoin has authored numerous articles and co-authored a 2003 review of the literature supporting differentiation. From 2000-2006 Brimijoin was a member of the ASCD Differentiation Faculty Cadre and continues to consult with schools across the country on differentiation, curriculum design, gifted education, and teacher education.

Not for students who know little about the subject

This is probably a very good book for the school principals and administrators if they want to implentment the program and want to know how to do it exactly. It is NOT a good book for students who have no background on the subject and want to know more about what differentiation is. This book never clearly define what differentiation is. It is very confusing to students. It goes right into implementation. Points are not clearly lay out (author used a lot of paragarphs and chapters to explain what the schools did). 3 out of 4 students in my small group hated this book. It includes a lot of sample worksheet for school administrators.

I borrowed the previous edition to take a look and found that it is a much better book for education majors. It talks about things in teachers' perspective. This edition talks thing in school administrators' perspective.

Fascinating and Insightful

I loved this book - Victoria Sweet shares heartfelt human stories of healing along with her own journey in medicine, with commentary on our current health care system and insights from her research into the history of medicine dating to the middle ages. Especially enlightening were her ideas on the role of the human spirit in healing. I found her explaination of how curing was handled in the old days fascinating - how people thought about illness back then, how our thinking evolved, where we are now and what we could learn from the past. Also interesting was the hospital where Sweet worked - its history, culture and patients made for great storytelling. Highly recommended.

All should read Gd's Hotel and realize the difference in health care year's ago and today.

Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! Read it in less than three days. Wonderful story of Laguna Honda hospital in San Francisco that took care of patient's other hospitals didn't want to spend money on and Victoria Sweet took care of them with coving care and even saved some of them much longer than if left on the street to die. Made me realize that today's HMO's and hospitals and doctors think it is more important to make and save money than take care of both the health and souls of patients.

Would recommend to anyone who wants to realize how little our health care system cares about the patients.

I absolutely loved this book. I am a Hospital Chaplain by profession. The care, empathy, and love for the patients at Laguna Hospital was evident throughout Dr. Victoria Sweet's book. I would highly recommend this book.

Decent effort at decoding security concepts in Dynamics AX 2012 R3

Security in Dynamics AX is a crucial area often overlooked in normal AX implementations. In AX 2012, security has become more significant due to the complexity and scale of standard functionalities and features of the product. Therefore I went through this book with much interest. There are plenty of security related info for both experienced and novice AX developers and administrations in this book.The author has covered security aspects such as CAS, TPF and XDS so credit to him. The technical details covered in the book are accurate. The book also briefly touches up on an interesting but often overlooked feature called 'organization hierarchies'. I would have liked to see contents such as end to end example such as managing security roles and underlying processes such as assigning users to this role etc, explanation of pain points surrounding security, security development tool (which works with R3 version) etc. But overall, this book offers decent insight into the security domain within Dynamics AX.

Working with security in AX2012 is quite different compared to earlier versions of Dynamics AX. One huge difference is the need to have some basic understanding of how security is defined within the application itself. This book starts off with laying down some basics of how security artifacts are defined in the AOT and further builds on top of that skillset. Debugging your security is covered, and also how security through the Extensible Data Security (XDS) is setup in Dynamics AX. The final chapters discuss how to extend the organization model and finally how to secure your Enterprise Portal (EP) artifacts.

It is a compact book with less than 80 pages and a handful chapters. The content is built for Dynamics AX2012 R3, but is relevant for earlier versions of AX2012. If you're already an AX developer, you can skip over most of developer basics. As someone who is curious to understand the mechanics under the hood, I could have wished for more in depth details, but the book does a fairly well job covering security for AX2012 R3.

About the Author

Mark Leccese is an associate professor of Journalism at Emerson College. He has worked in print and online journalism for 35 years as a reporter, editor, and blogger. For several years, he was the media criticism blogger for The Boston Globe and WBUR-FM, a National Public Radio affiliate. His work has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, Quill, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Commonwealth, America, The Boston Globe, Boston Phoenix, and Boston Magazine.

Jerry Lanson is the author/co-author of Writing for Others, Writing for Ourselves; Writing and Reporting the News; and News in a New Century. He currently blogs for the Huffington Post and has posted several hundred blogs over the past five or six years on five different blogs. He was the first chair of the Department of Journalism at Emerson College (1999-2005) and has taught full-time on the faculties of NYU, Boston University, and Syracuse University.

The Elements of Blogging is so incredibly helpful. I am a TV writer living in Los Angeles, and because I work seasonally, I wanted to learn how to create a blog to improve my writing skills, so I don't twiddle my thumbs in the off-season. The Elements of Blogging gave me a ton of ideas and a boost of confidence as well. ("The odds are you know more about something than others--and probably more about several somethings.") Especially instructive was this advice: "You don't have to post every day, but you should write every day, even if only a few lines." This particular advice is made easier by the book with its fun and easy-to-grasp exercises at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated the guidance on ethics, podcasts, gold coins, and "link love". All that plus the author's piece on media coverage of a foul-mouthed David Ortiz made my day. Bravo.

Great book to educate people on blogging!

Social media is a huge part of my job, and we have been thinking of starting a blog. I bought the book because of that and also because one of the authors was my former journalism professor and one of the best teachers I have ever had, so I knew I'd learn a great deal. This book gives solid guidelines for starting and maintaining different types of blogs (travel, advice, politics, everyday, etc.) and building your brand. The book covers humor, ethics, blog design, dealing with spammers... It would be a great textbook for journalism or communication classes, and it's a really great reference for those of us who started out getting our news from print media and now have transitioned to online media! It would also be a great book for the "home blogger," small businesses, and anyone else thinking about blogging.

The next best thing to having Jerry Lanson as a teacher!

If you have not had the good fortune, as I did, to have Jerry Lanson teach you how to write and report the news, this book is the next best thing. The Elements of Blogging pulls off the neat trick of being erudite but accessible, practical but theoretically sophisticated, and useful to novices and beginners alike. It draws useful distinctions between news and opinion blogging and takes beginning bloggers through each step of the process of defining, designing and developing a blog. It is particularly strong when it comes to nuts-and-bolts reporting, interviewing and writing skills. That's not surprising, given the authors' deep resumes as journalists, journalism educators and writing coaches. I have already used portions of the text in a college-level first seminar class, and I plan to use it as a required text in an upper-level course on political reporting.class. No matter how the news business changes, the skills imparted in this book will continue to be essential. I heartily recommend it to anyone aspiring to be a professional communicator.

Worth the wait

I preordered this book back in June (might have been July), and the release date kept getting moved back. Was starting to think it was never coming out. But here it is. I really needed this book, I started with Corel Draw way back with version 2 - and worked with it through to version 8 (and the my place of employment switched to using Adobe products). I picked up a license of Corel Draw X5 home and school edition, but never really got into it. It was just a bit too different that what I remembered. Now I am planning on becoming proficient with Corel Draw once again and have a license of the new X7 that I want to learn. Which is why I wanted this book. Nowadays you usually don't get a manual with software - least not like you use to. Sure there is a PDF user guide that comes with the software, but I like having a real book that I can hold in my hands. This new edition of the Official Guide is great - IMO. It's filled with tutorials. There are files that you need to do most of them, and you have to download those from a website. The book has information on where to do that.

One thing I really look for in a book / manual like this is a comprehensive index. I want to be able to quickly look up information when I need it, and having to blindly flip through chapters to find something drives me crazy. This guide has a good index.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot from this book. There have been a lot of changes and improvements to Corel Draw since I last used it. Starting off, I'm working on learning some new 3D techniques right now - Chapter Three.

Not Corel Draw X7 for Dummies but it has it all in it

This is a hard review to write. First I should say I have some sort of reading and understanding at the same time disability when it comes to stuff like this. With that said I still like the book but I use it strictly for reference.

After a lot of research for my new business I decided the program Corel Draw X7 seemed to be the best investment and universal program to use. I had used other "design" programs before but nothing with so much going on in just one program.

I knew the program could do almost all I needed, but knowing it can and knowing how it can are 2 different things.

I could not locate a Corel Draw X7 Book for Dummies so I went with this one. I ended up pretty much learning from YouTube most of the items I needed to get a really good understanding of Corel Draw X7. I now find the book more useful now that I have a 50 to 70 percent base understanding of how the program works. (That percent is a guestimate, the more you know the less you know) My personal challenge is always remember how something is done, even if I have done it before and this book is nice to just look at quick and go "oh Yea".

It may work well with others as a book to use to learn the program if you have a good ability to read, understand and maintain something. Otherwise it is wonderful for easy look ups. It seems to be organized well and I can easily look up items that I am looking for at that moment.

I would recommend this book for just about anyone trying to learn or just for reference. It may not be as useful for some but any book that can help in any way can't be a bad thing.

A Must Have To Get The Most Out of CDX7

Gary David Bouton and CorelDRAW go together like pizza and beer, cookies and milk, or governments and corruption. Long after you work your way through the examples and slowly master the features of CDX7 you'll want to keep it handy as a reference. Bouton's tutorials let you learn basics and then stretch your fingers and master the finer creative choices available to you. Beginner or intermediate, this is a great book.
