The Dark Princes: Scifi Alien Romance (The Ravager Chronicles Book 2), by Sara Page

I'm alive.

I survived the wilds of that remote planet I crashed into, and I've been trying to get to know my new alien lover before I return home and introduce him to my father. Yeah, so not looking forward to that introduction but at least I'm not knocked up... yet.

Everything is going great until we intercept a transmission from my home planet. Apparently my jerk of a stepbrother has been telling everyone I'm dead, and they believe it. There's been a funeral for me and everything.

So now it's a race home to prove to everyone I'm still alive and breathing before they pass on my crown and title to the next girl in the line of succession.

And if that's not enough on my plate, another alien has decided to step forward and he's claiming I'm his, like we're fated or something. Ha! And I don't even like the guy, seriously can not even stand him.

And you'd think my current alien lover would be mad... But no, he insists on bringing the other alien guy along because he's convinced I need the extra protection.

One Ravager? I think I can handle it.

But two sexy red-eyed purple space demons? Two might prove to be too much for this princess...

The Dark Princes is the second book in the Ravager Chronicles series.

This series sizzles
By Gigi's Reads
I was gifted this book for an honest review.

The Dark Princes continues Princess Ameia's adventures with the Ravagers. Of course when she first encountered Beast she didn't know he was a Ravager. Without his Obsidian armor he's just a giant purple alien with red eyes, right? Now she's on her way home with Beast, will her father accept her relationship with Beast/Prince Drek? And what is up with Commander Striker?

I like Ameia, she is a strong personality, and has a good head on her shoulders. Beast is possessive, fearless, and thinks of Ameia's good first. Striker is a wild card, we'll just have to wait and see about him!

5 bright shiny stars!

TSTL Heroine.
By Faith
I'm not even finished with the book, and I'm already reviewing it. I didn't like book one, but I saw the other reviews, and I hoped the author had somehow been able to pull this one out of the death spiral of TSTL Heroine. Nope. I'm at the end of Chapter 10, and it's not going well. At all. I don't know if I'll be able to power through this drivel...

Two hours later... *Whew.* I finished it! That was hard. I didn't think I could do it. But I did it. Yep. Really stupid! I'm not gettin' those hours back. Noooope.

Destiny Wins Again
By Amazon Customer
First, Princess SOS needs to be read. That was a really good book. This second one...WOW, just WOW!
Some females put out a Calling, not that they realize it. Ameia is Beast's Calling. She accepted him in the first book. She is also Striker's Calling. Ameia has been brought up in a monogamous environment so she has a hard time with this. Striker's arrogance and smugness annoys her to no end. She doesn't want to be anywhere near him. But she has no choice when they take her back home. She needs him to anchor her while going through the wormholes, which she doesn't like because they have to be in physical contact. She's distressed because touching feels good, feels right and can't and shouldn't because she's committed to Beast. She's dealing with the fact that she just watched her own funeral and now this. Ameia is so edge about getting home, showing her father she's still alive and having Ravagers with her, which she knows won't go over well. Upon returning she finds out her father was severely burned in a fire that they say he started. Her father mutters that she is to marry Vrillum, her step-brother that may have caused her escape pod to crash on an uninhabited planet. The palace is empty of staff and she's told at gunpoint that she can't leave. Beast leaves to go back to his ship to bring medical personnel and equipment to help her father. Striker stays behind to protect her and uses this opportunity to get her to accept the Calling with him. Of course, plots deepen, betrayals come to light. Ameia finds her strength and learns to be honest with herself.
You learn alot about Beast and Ameia in the first book. Striker's character is defined but not as well as I would've liked. The plot and it's twists and turns are really good. Highly recommend. I hope there is a third installment. It doesn't feel like the story is complete yet.
I originally received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I also read through KU to give author credit.

Historical Dictionary of Azerbaijan, by Tadeusz Swietochowski, Brian C. Collins

The history of Azerbaijan is a chronology of its domination. Its most recent ruler was the USSR, but Azerbaijan has been within the boundaries of many conquerers from the Medians to Alexander the Great to the Arabs and Turks. Through the long history of foreign occupations, the Azeris have preserved a national identity and they have periodically generated local leaders. With the recent break up of the USSR, Azerbaijan can once again assert itself as an independent nation. Strategically located and of economic interest to other nations, Azerbaijan cannot be ignored.
The Azeris are united by their language, Azeris, their religion, Islam, and a common history. However, since the Russian conquest of northern Azerbaijan in the first half of the nineteenth century, they have been divided by politics. Azerbaijan is a divided land; its cultural boundaries stretch beyond the geopolitical ones so that a large portion of what was once Azerbaijan is currently part of Iran, and more Azerbaijanis live within Iran (in Iranian Azerbaijan) than in the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
The contemporary history of Azerbaijan has been a complicated story. There is an on-going conflict with neighboring Armenia which has shaped not only foreign policy and relations, but the domestic politics of the nation. Those politics have been further complicated by Western interest in Azerbaijani off-shore oil deposits.
Given its history, Azerbaijan is certainly not the easiest country to describe. This historical dictionary does an excellent job despite the difficulties. It provides entries on persons, institutions and events, with some emphasis on recent periods, but with a view of the earliest history. There are other entries on the important aspects of the economy, society, religion and culture. Also useful are an introduction for context, and a helpful chronology. A select bibliography of works in English and other languages completes the volume.

Review
The Historical Dictionary of Azerbaijan offers compact but thorough coverage of historical periods, events, and significant personalities. In light of the important position Azerbaijan has assumed internationally, this book is a much-needed reference for those interested in this area...The entries are concise and well written and do justice to all aspects of the political and socio-economic history of this area...The Historical Dictionary of Azerbaijan is highly recommended for every public and academic library, as well as interested individuals. Just right
By R. Travers Daniel
I am particularly excited about this new, improved and expanded book. After reading lots of other books on supercharging I was about to give up, overcome with unessary formulas and computations. I found Mr. Gordan's first book thru an enthusiast's website and my project was reinvigorated. His direct and simple to follow instructions contain just enough back-up information to let me know the 'why' behind the 'how-to'.

Several of the other books I read turned out to be thinly veiled advertizing or compilations of dated, superficial articles on installing kits long unavailable.

Mr. Gordan has a very thorough understanding of boost and its good and bad effects on motors. He communicates the appropriate cautions and solutions well. He has created several supercharged vehicles that have racked up the miles and are still going, the proof is in the pie!

Without this book I would not be driving my car with 8 PSI of boost today! Have you noticed how almost every automobile manafacturer offers boosted motors? It is because boost works!

If you are considering building a supercharged motor, this book will make your job easier. Even if you are just installing a supercharger kit on your car, this book will give you a real understanding of what is happening and why it works so well.

A supercharging must read.
By Mike Barrenger
This is a great read for those wanting to understand supercharging in detail. Having built a supercharged engine myself with the help of Greg's previous book, this new book includes the old information plus a lot more. It is written in a very accessible manner, which means people new to supercharging and old hands alike will benefit. A problem with a lot of supercharging books is that they are now 20 years old or more. Things have moved on a lot. This new book captures a great wealth of relevant, recent information, allowing the potential builder to quickly and easily determine the most suitable supercharger setup for their application and turn it into a reality!

A must read, and at this price, it's a simple decision!

holy......
By Magnus Nielsen
This book Should be called the ultimate Alfa Romeo roots supercharger guide because that is what it is,
I personally only have use for centrifugal supercharger info.I paid good money to learn about superchargers In general, but ended up with alot of (for me) not so useful info about various roots set ups.

I expected to have about a third of the book touch on centrifugals since the preview section was organized that way, i feel it was presented that way because there is a big market on centrifugals, "they sure reeled me in"

sad story is that apart from the preview chapter(s) there is nothing at all in that direction. exept the author going on about how he's not saying roots is better over and over again, and then for the milionth time concluding that its better.

If you are looking to get wiser about centrifugals look elsewhere. Just read the preview, cause that's all there is.

It brngs me no satisfaction to hurt the authors feelings.
My purchase however, clearly hurt my wallet to the authors satisfaction.

Heartfelt, fun, uplifting
By Kristine: Glass Paper Ink Bookblog
After the emotional turmoil and devastation of The Problem With Crazy I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from Eleven Weeks, this was very much a blind beta read for me, I was assured this was a much lighter companion of sorts to the first book in the series, but what I wasn't prepared for was the depth of emotion that McKellar draws from a moment.

Am I scaring you? Are you grabbing for the wine and tissues? Hold on a second because this isn't that kind of book, where TPWC was very much Kate's story, this is clearly Stacey's, the fun filled, joyous, ready to party best friend. I thought no one could compare to Kate but boy was I wrong, the immediate connection I felt to Stacey caught me off guard, invested? Completely, utterly and within the first sentence. Stacey has never quite felt enough, never had a clear direction of what she wants and where she wants to do, she's never had the familial support that would reinforce her worth, would tell her she's capable of greatness, capable of anything she wants.

While Stacey stole my heart from the very first page, Michael held my attention, his easy charm and straight forward Aussie sensibilities was simultaneously endearing and sexy. A deviation from the stereotype, Michael isn't bad boy rocker, he's not waiting for the right girl to come along to turn him good, Michael is inherently good, throw in talent and a music star in the making and he's both the kind of guy you want to take home to meet mum and dad and the one you want to sneak out with in the middle of the night.

Once again McKellar has bravely taken her stories far away from the stereotype, she's dared to write something so effortless in it's sheer beauty that I was immediately drawn into her world, connecting deeply with her characters, leaving me desperately wanting more.

REVIEW:

All the Crazy in Love books held a lot of emotion and make the reader invested in the story, and Eleven Weeks was no exception. Although the first book affected me more than the second one, I still was on edge the whole time while reading Eleven Weeks and was dying to see how this one will end.

Eleven Weeks is about Stacey, a character you might have met before if you have read The Problem With Crazy, the first book in the series. To me, Stacey, in the first book, was one of those cheerful girls with nothing to worry about and always willing to face the problems without a care of what other might think. I couldn't have been more wrong! And that's what makes this story a must read one, because what we learn from Stacey in the first book is nothing compared to what we learn in Eleven Weeks.

Her story is about being the black sheep in a family: not wanting to pursue a career and being mocked for it. It's pretty awful to feel the pressure of not really knowing what you want to do at eighteen, but imagine if you have no support whatsoever from your family. Even they mock you by not expecting great things from you. I hated her family for that because I could identify with her, even if you were never in her situation, but for the simple fact that you could've been. Moreover, the pressure of being the fifth child in a big family where all siblings have achieved great things. How can you top that?

And Stacey's world is about to tumble even more because she's pregnant from a one night stand that she didn't even remember. What's worse? Is that she might lose the only guy she's ever loved and that has really cared for her.

But not only that, Lauren K. McKellar brought into this story the consequences of unprotected sex and the huge decision of what to do after that. What it means to keep living with the choices we make and the consequences of our actions.

The characters are relatable and approachable. Easy to feel yourself identified and easy to love. Stacey's simply a teenager who has made some mistakes, but she's good, kind and will do anything for her friends. Michael is the perfect definition of the boy next door: sweet, gentle and real, who'll also do anything to defend his friends and to make the girl who loves that she's perfect no matter what.

The plot is a mind-blowing one, just like the one in the first book. Not at all repetitive and with it's ups and downs. Meaning that it has it all: the funny moments, the swoon worthy moments, the sad ones and the heartbreaking ones. What I loved is how Stacey's story mixed with Kate's; like having two point of views, but two different stories at the same time.

I truly enjoyed Eleven Weeks and hardly recommend it to anyone looking for a real, heartbreaking and emotional YA story. The only thing left to say is that I need to read the third book, because I no longer can live without this series. I simply need more! And really look forward to reading the third book in the series.

*I received this digital ARC in exchange of an honest review. Thank you so much, Lauren K. McKellar for providing me this amazing read.

Thou Art My Battle Axe, by Paul Enenche MD

The mere mention of the battle axe introduces or links the mind to war. No one talks about the battle axe if there is no battle. And no one talks about weapons of war if there is no war. We are in battle, every day.
The battle line is drawn. The battle is between the forces of darkness and the forces of light; between the forces of good and the forces of evil; and between Jehovah - the Mighty Man of War - and the god of this world.
The worst thing that can happen to anyone is to be in the midst of battle and not be aware. Such a person ends cheaply as a casualty of battle. To live in this world without battle-consciousness is to die like chicken. To live in this world without battle-consciousness is to end as a casualty. To live in this world as a believer or pastor without battle-consciousness, is to end as a mess in life and Ministry. This book is an eye opener on the realm of the spirit and how we can bring the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ to our world through our individual lives

He now leads a nice normal life writing about fantastical armies, undead pirates and gribblies from outer space.

Good collection on the same theme and events
By JPS
This is a good collection of four novellas, each of which is about a hundred pages long. The general theme is the Tau invasion of the Empire, beyond the Gulf of Damocles, and their attack of the strategic Agrellan system. An interesting feature of this collection is that while the four stories can be read separately and are written by four separate authors, they are also clearly linked and the authors seem to have coordinated and talked to each other.

Another good feature is that this title does add to the existing collections in several respects. The descriptions of the Tau and the multiple illustrations of their highly advanced technology and their consummate skills of deception, subversion and surprise are one of the most interesting aspects that are common to all four stories. A second element that I enjoyed was the variety of styles and perspectives from which various episodes of the same theme of events – the Tau invasion – are being told. One perspective which I found particularly interesting what that of the human “traitors” – whether an ex-captain of the Imperial Guard or an ex-Inquisitor turned rogue – serving the Tau against the Empire of Humankind and wanting to believe in the “Greater Good” because they hope it is better than the ghastly, decadent and cruel Empire.

Those liking battles will, of course, find plenty to their liking. Interestingly, and for a change, the Imperials do not end up by winning, quite the contrary in fact since their shock troops, among which are the White Scars of Korsarro Khan and the Raven Guard commanded by their Chapter Master. Also present are a regiment of Catachans and the (great!) heavily armoured and devastating Knights of Voldoris who turn out to be more than a match for their Tau counterparts.

I liked all four stories, although some are perhaps better than others. While not really “bad”, I found that “Black Leviathan” was perhaps the weakest of the four, essentially because the behaviour of the squad of Jade Dragons’ Space Marines, and of their sergeant in particular, is hard to believe. At a minimum, the author should have provided more elements and explanations, perhaps more context about this Successor Chapter (about which I knew nothing, not even who their Primogenitor Chapter was supposed to be!) to explain why they compromised the whole mission in the way they did. The end of this story is also somewhat implausible, with the sergeant commanding the Jade Dragons’ squad getting of rather lightly given his actions.

Then there are the characters, many of which are rather interesting. You will get to know quite a bit more about the White Scars, their captain, but also a couple of their seers and Cemakan, the old grumpy veteran, but also about the Tau with their gifted warlord (or rather “warlady”) Shadowsun, and some of the other caster, in particular the idealist Skilltalker, ready to sacrifice himself for the “Greater Good”, and the rather unscrupulous Supreme Ethereal. My personal favourite, however, was Patriarch Tybalt of House Terryn and his massive Imperial Knights.

There are nevertheless a few glitches here and there and this is why I will rate the collection four stars, but not five. I have already mentioned those in “Black Leviathan”. There is also one in “Blood Oath”, the first and one of the strongest stories. Several mentions are made about a certain Traitor Shoh to which the warlord Shadowsun seems to be somewhat related but you never get to understand who this person is, what he has done to become a “traitor” in the eyes of the Tau and what the relationship with Shadowsun happens to be.

Problems with all these Space Marine novels
By Steven L. Coker
The problem with most of these Space Marine novels is they are pretty much all the same plot -- Bad guys pop up and catch them off guard. Big Battle - everyone dies, except the Big Name bad guys (who always seem to escape).
The Space Marines NEVVVER seem to be on the offensive and are always out-numbered.
Cant figure out why the Astartes NEVVVER seem to be the aggressors in these books. A few of the writers of these books are quite good but need to work on different angles.
I also wonder if anyone is ever going to write about the battle for Earth, when the Emperor and the traitors (Horus) battled it out. Something everyone knows happened but it has never been novelized.

Bookworm Speaks!- Damocles (Space Marine Battles)
By Jordan T. Brantley
Bookworm Speaks!

Warhammer 40,000

Damocles

by Phil Kelly, Guy Haley, Ben Counter, and Josh Reynolds

****

The Story: Four Novellas that focus on the events of the second Damocles Gulf Crusade.

Two centuries ago, the Imperium of Man and the upstart Tau Empire fought to a standstill in the Damocles Gulf. Now, as the 41st Millennium draws to a close, the Tau have returned. As the world of Agrellan falls under attack, the White Scars and the Raven Guard rush to its defense, but with the skilled Commander Shadowsun leading the alien forces, the Space Marines and their allies are hard pressed. Kor’sarro Khan, Huntmaster of the White Scars, swears that he will win the day in the most direct way possible-by taking Shadowsun’s head.

The Good: First off…it is a story of the White Scars. A first founding Legion under the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, who have an emphasis of mobile conflict, are sorely lacking proper representation in the Black Library, which is a real shame as they are quite fascinating. This is only the third book that emphasizes the White Scars to any significant degree. The same can be said about the Raven Guard. Bookworm doesn’t think he owns any books with the sons of Corvus Corax as the focus, which is also a shame. To see both chapters further expanded over the course of the novellas is a real treat. Furthering the entertainment value is the contrast to how the different chapters operate. The White Scar’s ride proudly into battle and collect the heads of their foes and display as trophies. The Raven Guard operate from the shadows and strike silently, their names unknown, even among their brothers. Contrast is a gateway to conflict and it leads into the primary reason why the antagonists of this volume are so appealing.

Of all the enemies of the Imperium of Man that Games Workshop has introduced, the Tau Empire may not be a favorite but from a creative standpoint they are one of the best. A great way to really challenge a protagonist is to pit them against themselves. The Tau represents what the Imperium of Man should have been had the Emperor had not been imprisoned upon the Golden Throne, a peaceful, progressive society, which values technological innovation and a government that works for the benefit of all, (supposedly). The Tau are also zealots in the same way that the Space Marines are. The Astartes fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Emperor and the Tau fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Greater Good, the philosophy that governs their society. The other enemies of the Imperium are fairly one dimensional: The orks just want to pillage and plunder, the Tyranids just want to eat everything, the Chaos Space Marines want to do both, and don’t get Bookworm started on the Necrons. The Tau are not a force of nature like Orks or Tyranids, they are a rival society which has multiple dimensions, same as the Imperium.

The only exception to this might be the Eldar but Bookworm has not read any stories about them yet.

Also, like the Imperium of Man, there may be less than honorable forces at work. While the Tau preach something that sounds good, the authors are wise to include little tidbits here and there that show that there is something far more insidious to the Tau than meets the eye. This is just Bookworm’s own hypothesis but it is hinted in one of the novellas that the Tau surgically alter humans to look like Tau. Whose greater good is it?

Speaking of covert motives. We get a new Space Marine Chapter! The Jade Dragons are introduces in the third novella of the volume. They are very interesting and Bookworm hopes we see them again. They definitely follow a more mystical approach to war than the Ultramarines. Like the differences between the White Scars and Raven Guard, the contrast between the two very different chapters provides amusing conflicts and different approaches between the chapters of the novella.

The Flaws: While by itself, the story is not bad, the fact is that the third novella in the book, Black Leviathan, feels out of place compared to the other stories. It takes place on a different planet other than Agrellan, which is contrary to the plot summary, and it involves neither the White Scars or the Raven Guard. It is back to the Black Library favorites of the Ultramarines, and The Jade Dragons, which we know nothing about. The other three stories share a common denominator but the only thing the Black Leviathan has in common with the other three is the fact that the Tau are there. We have plenty of Ultramarines stories, lets keep exploring the world of the Khan and the Raven.

Another common flaw is the disparate head-hopping that takes place. The perspectives switch places between the character pretty often and it can get a little confusing. In a few of the chapters the pacing needs some reworking.

Final Verdict: Damocles is an excellent book that provides multiple perspectives on a great crusade of the Imperium of Man.

Four out Five Stars
