A Great Book for the Times We're In

There's a high frequency of loving awareness coming through this book.

I finished reading it yesterday afternoon and my inner tuning forks were set a vibratin'. I had been noticing a particularly stringent round of discouragement and depression playing out in my mental/emotional field in the past few days. So this morning, I sat with the book again and the guidance on pages 139-153 really came home in a way that was visceral and effective.

The author expresses universal principles that I have been using from Buddhism and Advaita for years - in a way that synergizes the teachings of both, simply, clearly and practically.

The consciousness practices are accessible, loving, kind, simple, humble, doable.

May "The Sovereignty of Love" be of benefit to many and All, far and wide.

Practically useless

I got this book after transitioning from Autosketch to Visio Pro due to integration with other software.
I ordered this book after realizing that Visio is based on markedly different concepts than Autodesk products. This book is pretty much a clone of the material that is available for free at the Microsoft Visio website.
Anyone who has dabbled with CAD programs before will know that drawing aids like Snap, Alignment and Guides are rudimentary tools, without which, you have no hope of creating even a simple drawing - Try looking up Snap in the index, it's not there. Instead, the authors think that they can teach you the program by giving you step by step instructions on a few sample applications. These sample applications only take you to the most basic of steps and then leave you on your own.
Looking through the help menu will serve you way better.

Better books are available - buy one of them instead

I had a good experience with one of the "Step by Step" books a few years ago, but this one was pretty disappointing. The text and exercises are helpful only at the most basic level. While I knew it was an introductory book, I did not realize just HOW basic it would be. If you've never seen Visio before, you may find it of some use, but it will be of absolutely no value as a desk reference after it's been read.

In addition, it is supposed to be a paperback book with a CD that, in addition to practice files, includes an eBook version for the buyer's convenience. That makes a good selling point for this product, but it is misleading. Only 60% of the book is in hard copy, the remaining chapters are stored in individual PDF files on the accompanying CD along with the eBook (which also contains only 60% of the content). I did not expect or want to be tied to my desktop computer in order to read the last 40% of the book (a total of 4 chapters).

Overall, Microsoft Visio 2007 Step by Step was poor choice and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Cassian Unsung Hero

I remember the first time I discovered the writings of St. John Cassian with the freshness as if it were only yesterday. About 15 years ago I was almost done reading through the Ante-Nicene, Nicene, and Post-Nicene Fathers. St. Cyprian had my affection more than any of the other up to this point, then I began reading Cassian in series 3, volume 11 and discovered what I had been searching for. I have been reading the conferences once per year ever since as well as other times preparing for lectures on the conferences and Institutes.

Each time I read the conferences I fall in love with them all over again. I wish I could read them everyday all year long, but that would preclude me from reading anything else, since the Conferences are about 800 pages in this most recent for the first time in English complete publication.

Ramsay does an excellent translation into modern English. He keeps the flow while remaining true to the text as well as consistently translating particular technical words. Cassian was/is that living bridge between early Egyptian monasticism and that of Southern Gaul, Britain and Ireland. He and his friend Germanus spent about 14 years in Egypt interviewing and training under the most holy, and aged elders. From the abundance of wisdom, He chose to reproduce 24 of the conferences in order to help establish the "best kind of monasticism" in the west. Each conference focus' on a topic necessary to gain "Theoria," or divine contemplation through purity and integrity: in other words, through dispassion acquiring stillness and union with God. Cassian's works are profoundly clear and applicable to just about any situation we may find ourselves in. He writes of setting spiritual goals and objectives, discerning spirits, Biblical interpretation, prayer, patience, the 8 progenitor vices and their opposite virtues; of repentance and mortification of the will.

Not only does Cassian interview such spiritual giants as Paphnutius, Pinufius, Moses, Abraham and others we come across in other sources, but he quotes these elders quoting and sharing stories of their elders - the 1st century Elders such as Antony! Unlike other works of a similar content, Cassian purposely keeps narratives of miracles to a minimum. His primary interest was communicating the teachings of the Elders which serve for example of daily living, rather than wowing his audience with signs and wonders. That said, there is no lack of the supernatural, but only when necessary to drive home a point. He was a strong advocate of "Apostolic brevity."

Cassian is one of the unsung heroes of the faith. His influence, in my opinion is close to, or equals in some respects the blessed Augustine in the West and St. John of the Ladder in the East. Climacus gives due honor to Cassian in his Ladder and Cassian was the first to organize monasticism in the West and his works are found throughout the ancient Celtic Church, which, in turn, re-evangelized Europe after the fall of Rome. This is a long review, I know, but well-worth the read, if I encourage even one person to read even just the first Conference - for then you will be hooked.

Must read for all Christians

This is the complete text of all 24 of John Cassian's Conferences, some of which are translated for the very first time. This text could be, and indeed was, considered the advanced text on living the Christian life. While the stories of the desert fathers may sound daunting, their thoughts, as transmitted (and certainly adapted) by John Cassian are surprisingly honest, refreshing, and inspirational. These were people who truly sought, and knew God. As Cassian writes in the preface, we can criticize them as being too extreme, but the evidence of their lives testifies on their behalf. Virtually every aspect of life is covered here in some way, as Cassian relates his "conferences" with various monks in the deserts of Egypt. This book is so refreshing and stirring, especially given the "junk food" spirituality that most modern Christian publishers pump out. This way is not simple or quick, but it does point to a fuller life. All those who say they follow Christ should give this a read.

My favorite book

Of all my books, this is my most important - the one I keep by my bed just to open up and read. It is filled with post-it tabs.

I agree with all said in other reviews. But for me, it is not the sort of book one reads cover to cover. It is a source for spiritual nourishment, guidance and encouragement on an as needed basis.

Karen Ansel, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian and freelance writer specializing in health, wellness, food, and nutrition. Her work has been published in national women’s heath magazines such as Family Circle, Woman’s Day, Cooking Light, Fitness, Prevention, Shape, Weight Watchers, Natural Health and Marie Claire. Karen is the New York City media representative for the New York State Dietetic Association and a contributing editor for Woman’s Day magazine. She received her B.A. from Duke University and her Master’s in clinical nutrition from New York University. Karen lives in Long Island, New York, with her husband and two children.

Great Cookbook for Little Ones

I love this cookbook! The stages are easy to to follow and the recipes are delicious!! The pictures are beautiful and really inspire you to try the recipes. I have used this cookbook since my little one started eating solids and he now is eating everything. The toddler section is particularly helpful for me as I try to expand lunches and dinners beyond your typical peanut butter and jelly fare. Our favorites are the homemade cheesy noodles with broccoli and the veggie quesadilla with spinach and mushrooms. The food is so good, I make lunch/dinner for the whole family. And most of the recipes use 1 pot/pan for everything and are super quick and easy which is a must for a busy mom!

Beautiful Book, Easy recipes

This book is not only beautiful but the recipes are simple and easy to use. The book has the perfect blend of information about preparing, storing, and serving baby food along with yummy looking recipes to please baby's palate. It really bothers me when people review baby food cookbooks and say it's too "simple" or too "obvious." First of all, part of the point of these baby food recipe books are to show you how 'simple' and easy it is to make your own baby food. Baby food purees are exactly what they sound like. Steamed fruits or vegetables that are blended into a puree to make it easy for baby to eat. You are not supposed to overwhelm your baby with multiple flavor combinations in one meal and it is always recommended that you start out simple with one pureed fruit or vegetable at a time. Once baby has gotten used to basic flavors he/she can then begin exploring new flavor combinations and more complex recipes which this book also includes after baby has reached about 8-9 months of age. I would recommend this book to other moms as a good jumping off point for homemade quality baby food.

Beautiful Book

I bought this book when I was expecting my first baby. I knew I wanted to make his baby food but didn't know where to even begin. This book was very helpful and informative in helping start the process of making his food. I realized very quickly on though that it was lacking a lot of very important information. I had to do additional research to "fill in the blanks". That being said, I have been happy with the recipes that are in here. I like that there aren't any additional uneccesary ingredients included in these easy recipes like butter, salt, oils or any type of "flavor enhancer". I wanted basic, healthy food so my baby would learn how to eat without any side effects or tummy troubles. This book accomplishes that. The extra information I was looking for was things like...how do I know my baby is ready for the next stage... how to cook additional ingredients that weren't part of a recipe... or if a fresh fruit isn't available could I use a frozen substitute or canned, or what foods to avoid until certain ages... and those issues aren't addressed in there. So as long as you're willing to do a little bit of extra research then this is an excellent book!

Textbook

I bought this as a textbook for a class I was taking on school and community health. Some concepts in this textbook were difficult to understand after only having taken one introduction to health education class. However, the book cites plenty of resources and references. I have used other books by McKenzie and find him to be a great author.

I'm using this book currently for a Public Health course. I love how it explains the history of the beginning of a certain health laws in the United States and what it has manifested to at the present. Love this book and would recommend it to anyone just starting off in the Public Health field.

A Modern Master

This is a fabulous treat for the eyes.

Griffin perfected the late 60s San Fran poster art style in his work for the Dead and others (cover of Aoxomoxoa, for instance, or the immortal surfing eyeball poster for the GD with It's A Beautiful Day), and he was also a phenomenally gifted painter, spraybrush stylist, and pen and ink man. He takes the art deco influence of the SF school and melds it with a classicist's sensibility, creating a beautiful synthesis of mind and Mother Nature.

There is no doubt that Michelangelo or DaVinci would smile in appreciation at Rick's Omo Bob Rides South, a six-page black and white masterpiece where each page is an absolutely perfectly composed gem that stands on its own as a true work of art. He exhibits the total control of a master, and his eye for symmetry is astounding, as is the depth of his chiaroscuro. Griffin is also one of the great letterers of all time; it's a real joy to read words written in his inimitable script (but imitated ever since, including almost every decent graffiti artist).

To top it off, his writing is genius in Omo Bob, reflecting a deep understanding of life's many paradoxes. If you've never experienced this work, get good and ready in your favorite way (RG was an early fan of Dr. Hof, and that influence is clearly felt) and then spend at least ten minutes on each page, letting your eyes bathe in the serpentine brilliance; you will be endlessly rewarded. I still enjoy it at least once a year, decades after my first exposure to it (in the classic Zap comics), and never tire of its mellifluous lines and incredible detail.

The book also highlights some of his early surf work (a surfer through and through, Griffin's work embodies the grace and flow of a true waterman; no one has ever visually conveyed the joy of a wave like RG), his album covers, his paintings, and various pieces.

But it is Omo Bob and a couple other pen and ink pieces here that ensure his artistic immortality. Griffin was by all accounts a wonderful friend and a very spiritual man, and those qualities shine through in his art.

It is somehow very comforting and reassuring to gaze upon his work; there is proof here that a deep and perfect form lies beyond the seeming chaos of the physical plane.

simply beautiful

This is an excellent printing on heavy stock of some of the finest works from a master of poster and comic artist from the San Francisco Haight Ashbury era. I think it is a wonderful addition to any collection of psychedelic ephemera, and an admirable part of my own art library.

Great bang for the buck

This book was out of print for a while and ebay prices were not cheep. To get it for under $20 seems like a steal. It is exactly as I remember from the late 80's. Beutifully reproduced on nice paper.

In The Neo-primitivist Turn, Victor Li argues that this contentious term was never completely banished and that it has in fact reappeared under new theoretical guises. An idealized conception of 'the primitive,' he contends, has come to function as the ultimate sign of alterity. Li focuses on the works of theorists like Jean Baudrillard, Jean-François Lyotard, Marianna Torgovnick, Marshall Sahlins, and Jürgen Habermas in order to demonstrate that primitivism continues to be a powerful presence even in those works normally regarded as critical of the concept. Providing close readings of the ways in which the premodern or primitive is strategically deployed in contemporary critical writings, Li's interdisciplinary study is a timely and forceful intervention into current debates on the politics and ethics of otherness, the problems of cultural relativism, and the vicissitudes of modernity.
