About the Author
Chad States earned a BA from Evergreen State College and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. States was an Artist in Residence at Light Work in the summer of 2009 and received the Emerging Artist Fellowship for the Delaware Division of the arts in 2008. His work has been exhibited at venues nationwide including Hous Projects, New York; Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle; and FLUXspace, Philadelphia, among others. His works are part of the permanent collections of Light Work in Syracuse, New York well as the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn
University in Auburn, Alabama. States currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gordon Brent Ingram, Ph.D. is a scholar and practitioner of environmental planning and design. Much of his work has involved either conservation initiatives by indigenous and other tribal communities or sexual minorities increasingly engaged with decision-making around public space. His 1989 Ph.D. in Environmental Planning was awarded in the College of Environmental Design of the University of California, Berkeley and he has taught and held appointments at Berkeley, Santa Cruz and The University of British Columbia, among other institutions. He has written for numerous publications and was the editor of Queers in Space: Communities | Public Places | Sites of Resistance (Bay Press, 1997).

Alec Soth is a photographer whose work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and São Paulo biennials. In 2010, the Walker Art Center produced a large survey exhibition of Soth’s work entitled From Here to There. Alec Soth’s first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004. Since then Soth has produced many books, most recently Broken Manual (Steidl, 2010). In 2008, Soth started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom.

About the Author
Peter Vollmer has worked with the Wisconsin Humane Society, Milwaukee Veterinary Medical Association, Hills Pet Products and dog training groups throughout the country to develop pet owner education programs that emphasize the need to begin training early. He received the Dog Writers' Association of America writing award for a series of articles on raising dogs that appeared in Veterinary Medicine/Small Animal Clinician. The book, SuperPuppy: How to Raise the Best Dog You'll Ever Have! developed from that series of articles.

Peter currently lives in the San Diego area with his wife, Nancy and their dogs, Blackfoot, Sage and Pinto. They compete in agility and herding trials.

One of the first considerations in raising a super puppy is careful selection. Dogs come in all shapes, sizes, coat lengths, colors and dispositions. One area people often overlook when choosing a puppy is a thorough investigation of the particular characteristics that their pup will come to develop. Getting a dog on impulse, based primarily on puppy appearance, is not the best approach. Most pups are cute and cuddly, but puppy "cuteness" is quickly outgrown.

If you haven't already acquired a pup, consider whether you have the time necessary to raise him properly - or do you have more pressing considerations? Other responsibilities such as raising small children, school work, or full-time employment, may divert too much of your attention from the pup. Puppies, like small children, need a tremendous amount of social contact and direction in order to develop to their full potential - this means time on your part. Also, think about how its adult size will fit into your home and life-style. Can you provide adequate room for him, and will you be able to fulfill his exercise and grooming requirements.

Another consideration is temperament - an important aspect that is all too often overlooked. Temperament involves general behavioral tendencies that certain breeds of dogs share or have in common. For example, herding and coursing breeds may be more inclined to chase moving objects than other breeds. Another aspect of temperament is the individual puppy's way of interacting with its world, regardless of its breed or past experiences.

If you're thinking about a particular breed, take time to identify temperamental characteristics by locating breeders, trainers or pet shops with good reputations as knowledgeable professionals. Perhaps you know someone with a dog you like. Find out from them about the breeder, or ask local veterinarians or members of you local dog club. Honest, reliable breeders will be more than happy to inform you of their breed's qualities, both pro and con, and help you match a breed or individual with your life-style.

If you have your mind set on adopting a puppy from the local animal shelter, terrific! Just take time to handle more than one prospect, and try to keep an open mind so you can find that special one. The last thing you'll want to do is return the dog because it was the wrong pet for you and the family.

One more thing. As soon as your veterinarian feels your dog is old enough, have him or her neutered or spayed. This won't alter your dog's personality, but it will make it much, much easier for your pet to live with its human family and for you to live with a four-legged animal. If the dog were living in the wild, it would certainly need those hormones that spay/neuter removes, but the family dog need not, and should not, be under these primitive, hormonal influences.

Another benefit of early spay/neuter is better health. Animal medical research show that older pet dogs, who were neutered while youngsters had fewer tumors and other related health problems.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

If you haven't already chosen a pup, remember that a great amount of variability exists among individuals, even those of the same breed. So take time to study each prospect.

Puppies require regular, non-traumatic human contact between the third and sixteenth weeks of life in order to prevent a subsequent fear of people. Researchers have discovered that this process, referred to a primary socialization, can still be accomplished beginning at around the seventh week, even if the dog has had little or no contact with people prior to that time. If you're not sure how the puppy was handled by the breeder or others, select a pup within the seven-week age group.

When studying a prospect, be aware of any signs of withdrawal from or disinterest in people, as well as signs of being overly pushy. Balance is the key, so look for the well-rounded individual. Stay away from the extremes represented by the fearful litter runt or the bully.

Finally, handle each prospect individually by performing the subordination exercises beginning on page 6. Remember, you'll have to live with the pup, so select the one that likes to be around you and your family and also the one that you and other family members will be able to manage.

FINAL PREPARATION

Once you've decided upon a pup, prepare yourself before you bring him home by carefully reading over the following chapters. Plan his arrival so that you'll have ample time available (such as a weekend or vacation) to begin his life with you properly. Bear in mind that going to a new home will be an abrupt change, so don't pack his first several days with new experiences. Take time to ease the pup into the new routine. Hold off having many visitors or taking him visiting. He first has to adjust to you, your family, and his new surroundings before he's ready for the rest of the world.

Abrupt changes can produce stress in dogs, and one symptom of stress is loss of appetite - it isn't unusual for a new puppy not to eat for the first 24 hours. A good indication that he's adjusting to his new surroundings is eating. If, however, he continues to refuse all food after 24 hours, a call to your breeder or veterinarian may be in order.

During the first several days, concentrate on housetraining, introducing the den, and the subordination exercises. And remember always to know where the puppy is and what he's doing. The first 48 hours are important because the puppy's initial impressions can be long remembered, and it's much easier to teach good habits than to change undesirable ones.

Whether you are about to purchase a pup or have already acquired your puppy, you'll want the read the following recommendations carefully. Raising a puppy to his full potential as a close companion takes insight, patience, compassion, and just plain hard work. But your efforts will pay many, many dividends as your super puppy will grow into a valued family member who'll give you priceless hours of enjoyment and companionship over the years to come.

Looks can be deceiving.....

I have recently purchased several puppy training books and have been somewhat disappointed with them. While still searching for answers this book was recommended to me by my puppies breeder so I decided to give it a try. You should however order this with the knowledge that it is more of a pamphlet rather then a book and there are no photos. There are some illistrations but nothing that my child couldn't do. It has a yellow cardstock cover and 39 pages of information stapled to the cardstock to bind it. If you are looking for a flashy book this is not it. This book however had the best information I have found and cost far less then the other books I have purchased. It is not specific to breed but with the exercises he offers it does not need to be. I have been "testing" this book on my four month old puppy and have already noticed a big change even though I've only been using the ideas for three days. I personally believe the information is well worth the cover price even if the initial appearance of the book is not.

The best puppy raising guide out there.

This book deals with the basic information every new puppy owner should have. It explains clearly what you need to do, why you need to do it, and how to do it. It's easy to read and it's easy to look up individual sections. It should go home with every new puppy! I speak from some experience, having used this book to raise several puppies over the years. I have also been a long time puppy instructor with our local dog club and have recommended it. Several of our local veterinarians also enthusiastically provide the book to new puppy owners.

It covered all the information I want a new puppy owner or adopter of a rescue dog to know about dealing with all the basics of fitting a new dog into their home. It includes preventing and solving problems in an easy to read and follow manner using humane training techniques. No need to spend hours reading to get the information you need to help with your pup.Even a ten year old can, with a little help, learn how to turn a pup into a great best friend! Simply the best book I have found on the subject! And breeders it makes a FABULOUS addition to your puppy pack!

Nice to see folks get together to write a technology focused book for IOS XR and also provide examples to compare and contrast with other Cisco platforms in one book! One of the few books I have seen with focus on core basics and troubleshooting together. with coverage of routing technologies used day to day in the real life production network in large enterprise and service providers. I personally book was a much needed resource for the CCIE SP lab exam and also an excellent reference book for CCIE RnS candidates. Great job!

About the Author
Mark Owen is a former member of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as SEAL Team Six. In his many years as a Navy SEAL, he has participated in hundreds of missions around the globe, including the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean in 2009. Owen was a team leader on Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 1, 2011, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. A Gripping Story from a Boots on the Ground Perspective

In No Easy Day, you see an account of the raid to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden from the eyes on someone who was there - one of four team leaders on the ground that night. The account is most definitely gripping, I could not put it down and I skipped sleeping to finish it - yes, there will be hell to pay at work tomorrow. But, nowhere close to as much hell as the operators in DevGru (aka Seal Team 6) undertook to get into DevGru and to stay there.

The first thing that struck me was just how elite a team the US sent on that raid. To be a member of DevGru you have to ALREADY be a Navy Seal. Most who apply don't make it, but they go back to being a "regular" SEAL which has nothing regular about it. For the Bin Laden raid, they essentially assembled an All Star team of the most seasoned DevGru operators from multiple teams and put them together on a team consisting of the best of the best of the best.

My next takeaway on the actual raid itself was how many things actually went wrong. Here you have the best of the best taking part in a historic mission, and all kinds of things start falling apart. Yet, amazingly (to me), despite all the problems, it still worked out. Thats because everything that could have gone wrong was previously anticipated, contingency plans made, and all back up plans were rehearsed multiple times. While I considered the mission to be successful, the impression I get is the members of DevGru thought they could have done it much better. (I'll leave out the details as to avoid spoiling the story).

This leads me to my next takeaway which is just how devoted to perfection and exceptional performance these operators seem to be. One thing that surprised me is how much they train when they aren't deployed. If they aren't jumping out of helicopters on a real mission, they are jumping out of real helicopters for practice. The missions are abroad and the training sessions are state side but often away from home too.

In short, these guys don't ever seem to be at home very much, it just takes that much work and training to be as good as these guys are. I for one am glad they are on OUR side and my appreciation for them has certainly gone way up after reading this book,

No Easy Day very much gives you a view into both the Bin Laden raid but also the years and in some cases decades of demanding work that led up to it... And the title IS accurate, there doesn't seem to be ANY easy days as a member of DevGru.

Overall a gripping story on the Bin Laden raid with excellent perspective on the life of the operators in DevGru (Seal Team 6).

Excellent. An intense, well written, and captivating memoir. I finished it in one day.

I am usually a very slow reader and my attention often wanders, especially with non-fiction. This book though kept my attention completely. From the author's opening notes about how nothing in this book violates secrecy or operational security to the very last chapter I was completely captivated. The writing is superb and the flow of the book is great.

I highly recommend that you read this book. It is excellent not just as history, or a story, but also a book about how winners think. Guys like "Owen" look at challenges and life completely differently than average people do, and reading this book gave me a wonderful insight into his head. To get an honest view into the thought processes of someone like "Owen" is a unique and incredible opportunity.

I really enjoyed this book and feel like I learned a tremendous amount from it. I highly recommend it.

People who are bashing the book for being a sell out or violating secrecy either have not read the book or are looking at it from a very unique and odd perspective. I find it especially perplexing that some people are bashing him using his experience to gain fame and profit. Considering he wrote under a pseudonym and is donating a majority of the book's proceeds to charity, I can't really understand these accusations. He explains throughout the book that he was motivated to become a SEAL, in part, by reading a similar book about missions in Vietnam. I think that his primary motivation in writing this book is to inform the public, especially those very very few who might make up a future generation of SEALs and Delta operators.

About the Author
Walter W. Stroup, Ph.D., is currently professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Nebraska. His responsibilities include teaching statistical modeling, design of experiments, and research applications of mixed models in collaboration with researchers in agriculture, natural resources, medical and pharmaceutical sciences, education, and the behavioral sciences. Dr. Stroup received a B.A. degree in psychology from Antioch College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics from the University of Kentucky. He is widely published in statistical and applied journals and has participated in a number of symposia on issues in statistical consulting and statistical modeling. He has taught numerous short courses and workshops on generalized linear mixed models. A SAS user since 1975, Dr. Stroup is coauthor of SAS for Linear Models, Fourth Edition, SAS for Mixed Models, both editions. In additional, Dr. Stroup is author of Generalized Linear Mixed Models: Modern Concepts, Methods and Applications, an introduction to GLMMs that makes extensive use of SAS examples.

Outstanding, and not just for SAS users

I am an R user, and resisted buying a book on GLMMs with examples in SAS. But I heard about this book on R's mixed model mailing list (no less than Doug Bates gave it a plug). I decided to give it a read - boy was I surprised! This book has helped me to understand GLMMs like no other.

Here's what's good:

1. The book starts with the view that linear regression is a special case of GLMM, and builds a simple, clear, and solid exposition from this assumption. The author's case is persuasive; I think students (and others) coming at *regression* for the first time will benefit from this approach.

2. The first part of the book (esp. chapters 2) develops GLMM in the context of experimental design, with application's to "nature's experiments" -- ecology, longitudinal designs, panel data, etc. The focus on developing a good and appropriate linear predictor with a clear appreciation of the peculiarities of each specific design has strongly improved my understanding of GLMMs (and more basically of *regression*). I especially appreciated Stroup's advice on sketching a plot plan for each design. There's also a plain and persuasive argument on the importance of distinguishing between units of observation and units of replication/randomization when constructing any regression model.

3. The text is written cleanly. Few words are wasted. Stroup's dry sense of humor makes the book a pleasure to read, and fun! No BS. You get the feeling you'd like this guy.

4. Even the SAS parts were helpful (hence the surprise!) This is because Stroup works through the issues of how the computations are performed in light of the specificities of a model. Again his point is that you need to understand how to construct a good and appropriate linear predictor. No receipts for that. Oddly then, I think the SAS parts are worth reading and understanding regardless of whatever platform you use.

Drawbacks:
1. As a newbie to GLMM, I found I had to re-read some parts, and I feel I could use another read through it. Those who are coming at GLMMs for the first time should expect to move slowly. Those who understand GLMMs (or think they do) but are not used to concentrating carefully about design questions, will also want to move slowly. No canned solutions.

A LOT of mistakes/ typos, but still helpful

I purchased this book based on the positive reviews I read online, and I agree that this can be a very helpful stats and SAS textbook, but it lost points due to an abundance of errors and typos. Also, this is a very dense textbook, so it can be tricky if attempting to work through it on your own (rather than guided through it as part of a stats course).

It is still very helpful in describing the theory behind the model formation and selection. And I really like that the example SAS codes he uses in the book are available to download (for free) from the publishers website (http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781439815120).

The reason I'm only giving it 3/5 stars is because of how many mistakes and types are in the textbook (and in the SAS code available online, which as of now was last updated Oct 22, 2012), both which can seriously impair understanding and take a while to recognize/fix.

Some key examples are:
1) The data and output data set names give in the "Chapter_1_Table_1_1" SAS example file are incorrect. The code doesn't work as written; you have to fix the names for it to run correctly.
2) The SAS code provided for Example 3.5 (using data set 3.2) does not include the variables a or b. These need to be reconstructed based on the table at the bottom of page 85. However, following the outline of the table, the SAS output results for a and b are backwards. So to get the correct output as given in the book, the treatments need to be as follows:
treatment 0 = A0, B0; treatment 1 = A0, B1; treatment 2 = A1, B0; treatment 3 = A1, B1

These examples don't include the many typos in the actual text.

Also, since I wasn't as familiar with matrix algebra, I had to look online for a lot of help and clarification, especially early on.

But since this is forcing me to brush up on basic stats knowledge, as well as helping me understand more advanced concepts, I'm still giving it a conditional recommendation.

Explains the relationship between study design and analysis

I'm still working my way through the text but I give it a high recommendation. This is one of the first texts I've found to give a step by step description about matching study design with analysis plan. I appreciate the clear explanations and concrete examples. I lack an extensive preparation in statistics so there are some things I need to look up as I'm reading, but I appreciate the clear explanations of analyses with data that are not normally distributed. I also appreciate the periodic translation of terminology from other fields into what they're talking about (i.e. hierarchical linear modeling and social science). Thank you for making a challenging topic a bit easier to understand!
