The real deal

When we see television shows with those fictional forensic investigators going about their business coolly without a hint of a frown or nausea on their faces we have no idea of what the real forensic investigator has to experience. Esther's story tells of working with decomposing bodies dripping degusting putrid body fluids when needing to move them while blowflies try to crawl into your mouth. Of tragic suicides with brains blown out and the toll it eventually takes on anyone that has done it. Gutsy as she was she also initially had to deal with entrenched male attitudes in the police service. I first heard of Esther on the Conversation Hour on ABC radio some years ago at the time the book was released. This program along with the ABC's televisions Australian Story has stirred my initial interest in many a good book.

Crime Scene and there are plenty of them in Sydney!

Esther McKay has certainly written a remarkable book, which is gripping and lucid. She describes in riveting detail the work of a police officer in the New South Wales Police force stationed at various places in the Sydney Bioregion.

The book is also significant in that it outlines the insidious nature of the traumatic effects of crime-scene work. Over the course of some 10 years, this gruelling and horrific work finally took a toll on this woman and she retired from the NSW Police Force in poor health. She describes her emotional responses with rare and moving frankness. There are some swear words in the book when she gets angry, so be prepared!

One major part of the book she describes the retrieval of the bodies of two teenage boys who entered a hollow pylon of a bridge through an open porthole at Pheasant's Nest south of Sydney during December 1989. Apparently they accidentally fell about 36 metres through another man-hole while fooling around and were killed as soon as they hit the metal at bottom (base) of the pylon. There the bodies lay until about 2 weeks later, when somebody detected a strange smell wafting from the pylon. McKay explains the dangerous procedure of recovering the bodies and the toxic fumes and sludge encountered by the two courageous police body removers.

A very interesting book which outlines many tragedies. Recommended.

Quantum Psychology

I'm a retired PhD psychologist/rehabilitation therapist whose graduate work was in philsophy, science and Eastern religions. My dissertation was on Zen Meditation and the Development of Accurate Empathy. It was reprinted in many journals and published in the Aldine Annuals of Biofeedback & Neuropsychology. I'm a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, have been so for more than 20 years.

Because of my life and meditational experiences I have long been interested in the human mind -- how it works and how it is related to the universe. Mendell's book stitches together the gap between the so called soft science of psychology and the hard science of quantum physics by utilizing the quantum aspects of human thought processes to heal psychological and physical dissonances in the body and mind--leading to greater energy, creativity and excitement about life.

In spite of what might be thought of as esoteric, the book is easy to read, instructions for practice are simple, direct and easy to follow. I find the book and its reasoning sound. I do a lot of reading in both fields (theoretical quantum physics and psychology) and find nothing out of place or wrong with his thinking and practice. One of my daughters who is interested in understanding her inner mental life and how it affects her self image and family relationships finds the book very helpful, as my wife and I do.

Another exciting book by Mindell but his work is not that easy to put into practice

This is another excellent book by this wonderful author. I found it fascinating but extremely abstract and difficult to put to practical use without the personal help of the author.

The book is about dreams and body symptoms and "connect medicine and psychology with the physics of nonlocality".

Mindell's tenet is that working with your dreams and body sensations "in a real and dreamlike manner" changes your body experience. He states that our awareness interacts with the subatomic realm of our body.

He talks of the force of silence, which is the force behind everything. He has found that all body movements and symptoms can be traced back to subtle "imaginary" experiences. Symptoms begin in "imaginary time", which can be felt as a subtle body signal, i.e. the force of silence.

As you can see, the subject-matter is somewhat vague and obscure, and Mindell expresses himself in his own special way.

He discusses Rainbow Medicine, by which he means multidimensional approaches in medicine.

He tells us about flickering or flirts, by which he means awareness of the tiniest, most subtle experiences. He gives us intriguing examples of some of his work with patients or acquaintances, where he asks these to focus on tiny things that catch their attention, and informs us of the insights and experiences that reveal themselves out of this.

"Immense changes can occur by our honoring the tiniest perceptions ..... There is great wisdom embedded in body sensations and symptoms."

The author provides us with many illuminating but challenging exercises. One of these is on how to use our awareness to shape-shift into different forms and other dimensions. In this exercise you may notice "several body dimensions, worlds or hyperspaces". "The body's hyperspaces are where events such as creative urges or symptoms begin." By noticing these spaces, your body symptoms may be relieved.

Mindell refers widely to Carlos Casteneda and his teacher, don Juan Matus, and this book contains a chapter on shamanism and the essence of symptoms. To Mindell, the existence of symptoms is "like a big dream indicating that we are being called to undertake a new kind of training". (Ha, ha, I have many symptoms, so this should be good news for me!) Symptoms are not opponents to be overcome but potential allies.

Re exercises, there is one on the healing effects of overtones and one on "the hyperspace of a troublesome person".

In one exercise about "dreams, symptoms, genetics", we are asked to remember the earliest dream we can, or, alternatively, our first childhood memory. The first (and only) dream I remember from my childhood was a recurrent dream I had when I was about 3. We lived in a mansion and I dreamt that I was falling from the bottom part of the long stairway, which stretched over several floors, but I always woke before I landed. My first memory was of my mother dropping me in the snow when carrying me home from the birth clinic. She picked me up and stopped a passing taxi which we took it home. When talking to my mother about this memory later in life, it turned out that she never dropped me but the incident actually happened exactly a week before I was born when she was returning home from a checkup at the birth clinic, and she herself fell. (This affected me too of course, since I was inside her, thus my belief that she had dropped me.) I was born at a big hospital in Glasgow and knew this but my memory was of coming from the birth clinic, and this was what we were actually doing, or at least my mother was. She confirmed that all the details of my memory were correct except that the incident happened a week before I was born. I sensed that both this incident and my dream had to do with my legs, and in fact I have had problems with my legs for many years, and also fell myself a couple of years ago with long-lasting consequences which have not yet been resolved.

There's a chapter about how community influences the body, one of Mindell's main themes, and one entitled "symptoms are medicine from the future". Interesting, but I fear it will take some years before CR (consensus reality) progresses so far as to understand Mindell's tenets about curing ourselves by looking into our symptoms.

To sum up, this is another exciting book by Mindell but it is by no means easy to savvy. I would recommend this book if you are open to the author's work and have good time to delve deeply into it and try out the exercises. Good luck with it!

Am find this book very useful indeed. It is easy to read, with simplified explanations of difficult concept in science and spirituality. Would recommend it to those who find these concepts difficult to grasp.

Wow, so many important lessons for Christians!

Fran Sciacca offers a perceptive and incisive social analysis - particularrly of American, and more pointed;u evangelical, cultural values. Somehow our point in God's Great Story has been lost out of sight, out of mind. Instead, the American Dream, politics, technology invaded churches and the lives of Christians. Sciacca analyzes and criticizes the developments since the pivotal 1960s. So, What's Your Point?: Realigning Our Story with the Only One That Matters, helps to find your focus points again, offers biblical theology to unfold the Story from Genesis to Revelation. Drenched in Bible quotes, razor sharp thought about authors, preachers, culture and our forgotten mission are brought to light again.
Forget the How to-books, the self-help section in your local Christain bookstore, the preachers and teachers that claim to know exactly how the end times will look like. Let Jesus Christ be your true north. Fran Sciacca shows a new identity ladder for people of faith: Adamic, Adopted, Abrahamic, Alien, Apprentice, Ambassador, and Advocate. The book contains lots of valuable lessons on being adopted into God's familiy, instead of being born again in it. It really emphasizes the importance of acknowledge of the consequences of sin, and the shallowness of "getting in", "pray a prayer, live happily and go to heaven" or the "4 points and a prayer" version of the gospel. Way more important is the restoration of shalom on Earth.

Finding a Point

This book is divided into an introduction and three main parts where Sciacca discusses his ideas about our identity, purpose, and mission as Christians. The introduction was quite interesting as he discussed the history of the church in the last 60 years. He delves extensively into generational trends that affect the church. This is a great time to read those historical facts as Christians become divided on social issues of our time. Sciacca also discusses the effect of technology on the current population. He has obviously done a lot of research on both of those areas and gives many quotes from others as he goes along.

As the title references, this book focuses on Sciacca's ideas of what we should be asking ourselves as Christians. We are no longer in what he calls the narcissistic church of the '80s, and we've discovered that we need to be missional. The author's premise is that we must look back before we can look forward to discover our purpose.

This book is worth the read. It is a bit wordy for me, but you can't say Sciacca isn't thorough! Many pages are full of quotes from the Bible, other authors, and other sources. He makes his points clearly and takes the time to back them up. If you feel adrift in your purpose in God's plan, this book will get you started asking the right questions.

Sciacca brings up that many people have been chasing the wrong purpose. There are many cheap substitutions out there, but we can only get our true purpose from God. It is time that we stop trying to make ourselves known and start letting God be seen in us.

Using simple language and concepts, Sciacca shows how we can turn away from what society says our purpose is, and instead seek what is truly important. He splits the book into three parts: identity, purpose, and mission. In order to be purposeful, we need to know who we are, not what we do, but who we are. Then we have to know our purpose and how to fulfil it.

Though there is nothing complex in this book, it is not something to just breeze through. There is so much information in it you will need to take time to pause and reflect, especially on where you need to make changes. So, What's Your Point is about something that all people, even Christians, face. It isn't so much about new vs. old, but about what is true and right.

Terrific Book

If you can play a little piano say grade 2 or 3 and like the blues you will get a lot out of this book. Beautifully presented with pictures of the masters and different types of blues, takes a slow and easy progression from very basic triads to simple but really terrific sounding stuff to the more complex stuff. He encourges you to experiment and improvise and truely teaches ways to do this. Happily for my nieghbours I have headphones on my piano! CD has all the music on it with some different versions in triplet feel etc. Richards is a performer and teaches at a London music college. Certainly helped me. If you want to learn the blues this is really nice book. The book has its own web site so hunt around. Allows you to download a very nice blues and the sheet music to it.

best blues piano book I've seen

I've bought several other blues piano books over the years, and in my opinion this one outclasses them all. The pieces sound great, and the pacing of the material is fantastic. The book does a great job of slowly introducing the idea of improvisation, by encouraging mixing and matching ideas from the different pieces. It also goes into ideas like horizontal and vertical improvisation without making it too intimidating, and introduces some blues "cliche" endings and turnarounds. It covers many different styles from barrelhouse to stride to jazz blues.
The included CD lets you know how this stuff is really supposed to sound, and it's got a full "Recommended Listening" in an appendix if you want to explore further. All around one of the best instructional musical texts I've seen.

Start Here, Then Add "Exploring Jazz Piano"

I grew up learning to sightread classical music; a pretty standard set of piano lessons. Unfortunately, those lessons were weak on the theory of how music is created. This is a great book for someone like me who now wants to understand how to start in a key and figure out how to combine chords and rhythm and the right notes to make music. The book has things like how the blues scale works, how to pound out a barrelhouse left hand while improvising with the right hand, turnarounds and endings, and much more. There are some tunes in here to learn (Blueberry Hill, Pine Top's Boogie Woogie, etc.), but that's not really the point--Tim Richards goes on to explain how those tunes were created, and how to change and improvise over them. The CD lets you hear the exercises, and is quite helpful. I looked around a lot, and bought some definitely inferior books, before finding this one. The author also wrote Exploring Jazz Piano, volumes 1 and 2, which basically build on this book. I recommend buying all three. No book is going to substitute for practice, but if you practice what's in these books you're going to love what you learn to do.

Mr. Finegan has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Rowan University, and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Virgina Commonwealth University.

Robert Liguori, (Abescon, NJ) OCA, SCJP, has been a Senior Software Engineer since 1996 and is currently the lead developer for several Java based air traffic management applications. Mr. Liguori has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Information Technology from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Mr. Liguori is also the President of the Atlantic City Java User Group.

In general I think they do a good job of explaining the material

I read this book and took the test and passed.

The books is structured really well and covers everything you need to know. There are no grammatical errors and the authors write extremely well. In general I think they do a good job of explaining the material. There are, however, a few places where there are some mistakes. They need to get an errata going and fix those asap.

Here was my biggest complaint: The sample questions and mock test that they provide you on the CD is in no way shape or form representative of the level of difficulty of the questions on the real test. I finished test one from the CD in about 45 minutes to an hour and scored about 90%. On the real test I needed every moment of the 2 1/2 hours and got a much lower score. Of course I still passed.

Perhaps the kaplan tests are more realistic.

Not close to what I expected..

I tried so hard to like the book, I just couldn't get into it. I think so much of the text was unnecessary. Too many repetitions that you tend to lose the main point.

I couldn't even get through a few pages of it without falling asleep. The Sybex one seems more well written. I'm still waiting to read other people's comments and reviews.

Sloppy work

So I'm wondering if anyone reviewed this book before it was published? I'm only on page 15 and have already encountered some serious sloppiness. The first example exercise (1-1) doesn't compile with the current Java SE 1.8 compiler. It's missing the java.nio.* import. Secondly, Table 1-2, which is referred to in the Section entitled "The package Statement" [sic] is located in the following section entitled "The import Statement" [sic]. This is also the case for Figure 1-3, referred to in the section entitled "Java Basic Input/Output API", but located in the section entitled "The Java Networking API". If I wrote code with the same lack of meticulousness inherent in this book, I'd be both ashamed and out of work.

I'm hoping to see a response here from anyone associated with the publication of this book, but principally from one or more of the authors as they are ultimately responsible for the quality of the book.

    The Perfection of a Genre

    The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.

    The Best Manual of a Beginning Competition Driver

    I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all.

    What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques.

    I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book.

    Another major advantage of this book is the serious attention of the author to the role of hardware, which is sometimes overlooked by the other writers, who claim that hardware is important, but do not write in-depth chapters about it. The book has may illustrations and explanations how the center of gravity, wheel base, and the suspension elements like springs, shock absorbers and the roll bars affect longitudal and lateral load transfer speed and motion, which occurs during acceleration, braking and cornering; how various adjustment affect the weight applied to each of the wheels, and how this affects car behaviour. He is the only author to mention the effect of download on coefficient of friction of the wheel, and why the total friction of the wheels is at its highest level when the download on each wheel is the same, i.e. the car is balanced. The other writers in this case did only mention that to keep the car balanced is important without a sound explanation.

    The book has an appendix with the listing of racing resources, it has a good bibliography and a useful glossary and an index.

    I highly recommend this book, although sometimes I had a feeling that more humour and liveliness would have made it even better. Please also consider buying "Skip Barber - Going Faster" DVD in addition to this book.
