Chris Bowen MP is the Federal Member for McMahon in Western Sydney. He recently resigned as Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research and Minister for Small Business, saying it was the 'honourable' course of action following his support for Kevin Rudd in the failed leadership showdown of March 2013. A Blueprint for Modern Labor

As treasurer of Australia (at least until 7 September election) Chris Bowen's resignation from the turmoil of Julia Gillard ministry allowed him a period of six weeks to write his ideas about the ALP. Ideas of a Western Sydney parliamentarian wanting growth and opportunity for all but where universities are training for jobs; economies are for growth; politics simply ranges from the Greens on the Left to the Liberals on the Right; and little else except fairness matters.

A forward by former Prime Minister Paul Keating asks if Australia needs a Labor Party answering that the ALP as the "locomotive" lifting the great body of the community but having no "truck" with the traditional socialist objective. Yes, the language of Western Sydney.

Labor believes in growth and opportunity, according to Bowen; the Greens understand opportunity but do not understand growth; the Liberals understand growth but they do not understand opportunity. Opportunity for the kids from Western Sydney and Weipa but lacking is any idealism, environmental aims or limits to growth, the society Australia wants to create or the contribution our prosperity allows us to make to arts and science.

Bowen calls for a mass party which is reflective of the Australian population yet lauds the ALP's heritage and base. His call for ALP members to be involved in the choice of the party leader must dazzle for its unforeseen speed of implementation. As for the Greens, Bowen argues for governing alone or not at all.

"Hearts and Minds" provides a concise message to the ALP, his "clarion call to Labor's heartland", but accepts a one-dimensional Left/Right political view contra to a two-dimensional view which allows a mix of individual opportunity and protection of the environment necessary to appeal to a wider electorate than Western Sydney and Weipa.

A good, succinct summary of what the ALP should stand for

Hearts and Minds (2013) by Chris Bowen, the current treasurer of Australia is a rather good exploration of what the modern Australian Labor Party (ALP) stands for. The book is oddly named, not many people would name a book of rejuvenation after a failed slogan from a failed war. It should also be said upfront that this journey into the heart of darkness does at no time wind up with Bowen meeting the strange `Colonel Rudd' deep in the Queensland jungle during an election campaign and nor does he declare at any stage that `we had to destroy the electorate in order to save it'. But nonetheless, we can all be thankful Bowen didn't call the book `My Struggle'.
Bowen looks at what the ALP believes in and decides that reclaiming liberalism from the right is an aim. He puts forward economic growth and increasing opportunity as the main objectives of the modern ALP. There are two chapters devoted to each of these aims.
Bowen starts with a chapter on what, in general, the ALP believes in. Bowen includes the official objectives of the ALP that include anachronistic references to the socialisation of industry. Bowen points out that this has nothing to do with the way the modern ALP governs. Bowen has read, and refers to some interesting figures like Tony Crosland who argued in the 1950s that increasing wellbeing was more important for the left than government ownership. Roy Hattersley went further to declare that the true objective of socialism is to create a society where individual liberty is greatest. It's interesting, and perhaps redefines socialism to an unrecognizable form but it is worth considering. In Bowen's eyes this contrasts what the modern left should be doing to what the modern right does, which is to adopt much of the thought of Hayek, von Mises and Friedman.
There is then a good sized chapter on the ALP being the party of growth, which is all about how Hawke and Keating put through many important deregulatory, pro-market and some other reforms that are largely well regarded. There is a problem in that the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd government has a poor record here. Bowen remarkably argues that the Carbon Tax created jobs as some academic argued that you can regulate your way to higher productivity. It's more than a bit of a stretch.
The chapter on Opportunity highlights how by removing fees for University under Whitlam the ALP increased educational opportunities and then by bringing them back it again increased educational opportunities. Apparently whatever the ALP does to fees has magic properties. But overall this chapter does highlight what the ALP thinks it does differently to the Liberal Party.
Bowen then puts in his ideas for reforming the ALP which are well put and put into an international context. His arguments for changing the way the ALP leader is chosen are well put forward. He doesn't really consider the counter argument, namely that it isn't a broken system and in the past 50 years the only mistake the ALP has made was removing Rudd. The chapter also makes other recommendations on how to elect delegates for conventions and other ideas.
Bowen concludes the book with a few remarks summarising his positive vision for the future of the ALP. The book is nicely short, it's well thought out, well written and really does put forward a reasonably coherent vision of what the ALP should be. There is a bit of silliness and little recognition of the contribution of the Liberal Party's contribution to Australia, but that's fine for this kind of book. It's really quite a refreshing read and a good antidote to the fairly dour election campaign that is currently going on.

About the Author
Leo Frishberg is a Product Design Manager at Intel with more than 40 years’ experience in design. Leo co-discovered the techniques in this book in 1984 and has been applying them in practice for over 10 years in a wide variety of contexts including consumer gifts, industrial tools, software application development and emerging businesses. These techniques have been detailed in his writings for Interactions magazine and workshops he’s led during CHI conferences.

Charles Lambdin is a User Experience Researcher and Designer at Intel Corporation. He has a Master’s in experimental psychology and a PhD in human factors. Most of his publications are in the area of research methodology and statistics.

This book fundamentally changed my perspective on design research. Presumptive Design (PrD) teaches us to embrace being wrong. As the authors write, "Everything you know about the future is wrong." How true! This confirms a suspicion I've had for a while: it's OK to start the design process with a design artifact. Just put it out there. Then, learn about your assumptions and hypotheses from first-hand user feedback - immediately. Design is not about nailing it from the beginning, but how you become less wrong as you go along.

This book is well-researched and lays out the theoretical framework for PrD in detail. The authors bring decades of experience to the topic. A clear approach to facilitating PrD and running collaborative design sessions is described in detail in Chapters 14-16. Keep in mind that the purpose of PrD is "to elicit and provoke conversations with stakeholders about their mental models through the use of a throwaway artifact." In other words, PrD engages others in a dialog about design. But it also instills a much-needed sense of humility and learning into the organization: it's OK to be wrong.

Planning and executing don't have to be separate activities in design. Thinking and doing are not discrete steps. Instead, it's thinking BY doing. As Mike Tyson once said, "Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face." PrD shows us how to take that first bold step as quickly as possible to form a design plan that is based on reality, not on hallucinations dreamed up around a boardroom table.

Alexander Grzelachowski is best remembered by historians as the Puerto de Luna merchant who served Billy the Kid his last Christmas dinner on December 25, 1880. The young outlaw was being transported to jail in Las Vegas by Lincoln county Sheriff Pat Garrett. Grzelachowski immigrated to the United States as a Catholic priest in 1847. After serving for a brief period as a priest in Ohio he accompanied Jean Baptiste Lamy to New Mexico in 1851. He served as a priest in several parishes. In 1862 he joined the New Mexico Volunteers as a chaplain. He played a very importrant role in the destruction of the Confederatee supply train in the Battle of Glorieta Pass. He successfully guided Union forces back to safety through treacherous terrain after the raid on the supply train. After the loss of the supplies the Confederate soldiers were forced to retreat from New Mexico back to Texas. Shortly after his service as a chaplain, Grzelachowski left the priesthood and went into the mercantile business in Las Vegas. He started a family in 1870 and by 1872 he had moved to Puerto de Luna, where he opened a mercantile store. His Puerto de Luna store was visited several times by Billy the Kid. Grzelachowski had instructed the store clerks to allow the young outlaw to take whatever supplies he needed without interference. The outlaw was also known to have attended dances hosted by Grzelachowski. Grzelachowski was very active in civil affairs in San Miguel county and Puerto de Luna. He was one of the leaders from Puerto de Luna who played an influential role in lobbying the territorial legislature for the creation of a new Guadalupe county out of the southern part of San Miguel county in 1891. The county was oficially created in 1893 and Grzelachowski served as the new county's first probate judge. And as a San Miguel county justice of the peace he swore in the three new commissioners for Guadalupe county. The swearing in ceremony is believed to have take place in the office of his mercantile store. He had served as a justice of the peace for Puerto de Luna in the old San Miguel county. He was also the postmaster for Puerto de Luna and operated the post office out of his mercantile store. He was engaged in ranching and raised sheep, cattle and horses. Billy the Kid is known to have rustled horses from one Grzelachowski's ranches. He had a large orchard on his Puerto de Luna estate and also operated a large vineyard. Grzelachowski died in 1896 of injuries suffered when he was thrown from the wagon he was riding on the way to his Alamo Gordo ranch.

About the Author
Daniel Flores is the great-grandson of Alexander Grzelachowski. His maternal grandmother was Leticia Grzelachowski Padilla, Alexander's daughter. Flores was born in Puerto de Luna in 1946 in the same house where Grzelachowski treated Billy the Kid to his last Christmas dinner in 1880. In 1946 the house was owned by Flores' paternal grandfather, Cipriano Flores. Flores graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1969 and began working as a teacher for the Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools. He retired in July 2009 after a 40 year career with the school district. He was a classroom teacher for the first 15 years and an administrator for the last 25 years. His last 16 years were served as superintendent. In 2002 he was inducted into the New Mexico Activities Association Hall of Fame. The highlight of his education career came in 2007 when he was honored as the New Mexico Superintendent of the Year by the New Mexico School Superintendents Association. He lives in Santa Rosa, New Mexico with his wife of 45 years, Lupita. They have three children, Dan, Jr., Steve and Stephanie. Dan and Lupita are the proud grandparents of two children, Marcus and Hannah. They are the children of Steve and his wife, Tina.

A book that gives unified view of all major religions.

The author presents a visionary based histories of great initiates of maojor religions. The author emphasises that the initiates like Rama, Krishna, Moses, Jesus are real historical persons. His work includes Plato, Pythagoras also. The Krishna's case is interesting; it includes the Rasa leela and His Gita advice to Arjuna; but Kamsa is left unkilled by Krishna. The Rama's history is totally shaped by theory of aryan invasion of India. For Christians, the Jesus's history may be a disappointment since it does not make him unique in the way traditional christianity projects. His respect for Greek thought do tilt the balance of the work. His reasons to exclude Buddha are not convincing. Buddha is perfect link between Krishna and Plato. One point to be noted is that the book was written in 1817.

This book is a masterpiece of 19th century esoteric writing, and well worth reading...deeply.

Whether one believes in this sort of thing or not is irrelevant. The primary focus here is on a heartfelt search for meaning in the human existence, and the joy found in the ancient spiritual writings that are connected by a thread of enlightenment, a point of view commonly held by students of Esoteric systems.

How much of the descriptions of the spiritual lives mentioned in this work comes from research and how much comes from the voice of the author's close friend and contributor, a seer, isn't stated, but again, that's not critical to the point. Seers answer to no man or woman, and readers must decide for themselves whether to lend credence to what they're reading, much of which is richly laden with underlying metaphorical complexity and esotericism .

The focus of this great visionary's writing represents a look at the battle of the soul versus the intellect, and the struggle between the the world of the spirit and the world of materialism in the 19th century, when the scientific community was seemingly laying waste to one tenet after another of traditional religious beliefs.

This work is a call to arms for the metaphysical belief system, a testament that there is, in fact, a world beyond substance that incorporates the spiritual world, a world that surrounds us yet remains hidden, and that this is a world we may freely tap into if we search for meaning in the traditional places of its domain and show the correct amount of reverence and discipline needed to connect with it.

These searches, if one is inclined to them, are always well-worth the time for believers, and a total waste of time for the dubious.

For those truly interested in spirituality as a all-inclusive universal concept this is a magnificent work. To traditional Christians it is a work of heresy. To the materialist it is sheer nonsense.

From the perspective of each of the religions whose founders are discussed, this book will seem to be very inaccurate, even offending. The reader should understand that this book is not religion or theology, it is theosophy.
Not that I am an expert in this area, but it seems to me that this book is an accurate representation of the beliefs of theosophists. The origin of the races, the meaning and significance of religious symbolism, the advent of individuals who could bring spiritual truth to mankind by a mystical process are all the tennents of theosophy.
If you are an historian, this book can provide you an interesting view of theosophical beliefs, at least around the turn of the 20th century. Likewise if you are a theologian. Schure's descriptions of the life and process of the great persons he covers is worth reviewing because they were mystical persons or at minimum practiced mystical religions.

The primary reason to adopt this coding standard is to reduce the number of bugs present in new embedded software (a.k.a., firmware) and in code later added or modified by maintainers. Whenever it is generally the case that one rule chosen from a set of alternatives has the ability to keep bugs out, that is the rule we recommend. Thus following these rules as a set will help you keep bugs out in the first place. 

Of course, a coding standard cannot by itself eliminate all of the bugs from a complex embedded system. Thus this coding standard should be applied as part of the broader embedded software development and quality assurance process. An appropriate process may be lightweight but must emphasize the importance of software and system architecture as well as programmer skills training and should include design reviews, code reviews, and version control. 

Other important reasons for adopting this coding standard include increasing the readability and portability of software, so that firmware may be maintained and reused at lower cost. A coding standard benefits a team of developers and larger organization by reducing the time required by individuals to understand or review the work of peers.

About the Author
Michael Barr is the CTO of Barr Group, an embedded systems consulting firm based in Germantown, Maryland. Barr is a former adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering. Internationally recognized as an expert in the field of embedded software process and architecture, Barr has been admitted as a testifying expert witness in U.S. and Canadian court cases. 

Barr is also the author of two other books and more than seventy articles and papers on embedded systems. For three and a half years Barr served as editor-in-chief of Embedded Systems Programming magazine. 

In addition, Barr was a member of the advisory board and a track chair for the Embedded Systems Conference. He holds BSEE and MSEE degrees and has lectured in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland as well as the Department of Computer Science at the Johns Hopkins University.

A serious waste of money

This 89 page minibook, printed in the largest font of any technical book I have read, is instantly unimpressive. I cannot say I learned a single thing from this book.

If you can write drivel in a font appropriate for children, and sell it for the same price a "real" technical book sells for, that is a way to make a fast buck.

But there will not be any follow-on purchases of other titles from this author after you get a look at this offering.

An example of one of his "rules".... No variable name shall contain any upper case letters. So much for hungarian notation.

I say save your money, and buy a copy of "Writing Solid Code", or "Code Complete".

A quality coding standard for Embedded C Programmers

The first thing to note about any standard is that you ain't gonna make everyone happy by publishing a standard that says DO THIS and ONLY THIS, EVERY TIME. By their very nature, programmers of all types have to question everything they come into contact with...all of the time. When the law is laid down, few programmers like it. Standards for coding are lax or non-existent because of this basic fact. When standards are lax, code quality suffers. Fact of life. Don't shoot the messenger.

For example, one of the MUST DO things in this standard is that the "keywords if, else, while, for, switch and return" will always have one space between the keyword and the left parenthesis. Surely one can argue that this is purely stylistic. Today's modern editors obviously syntax highlight keywords, so why the need for a requirement that stipulates such things? The argument continues with "why should I have to type a space when I know these simple keywords forwards and backwards?"

The answer to that question is the reason for every company to use a solid, published standard particularly when it comes to writing embedded C code. When one considers that C practically owns the embedded world in terms of supported "high level language" compilers, not using a quality, published standard should be considered a flagrant violation of your customer's trust. While not everyone will agree with every statement in the standard, as published nor accept the rational presented occasionally as "Reasoning," quality programmers SHOULD take note that this standard is an evolution of lessons learned by a variety of embedded systems experts and collected herein for your convenience.

I strongly encourage those developing embedded systems to establish and use a standard, any standard. If you don't already have one in your environment, use this one. Please. If you already have one, compare it to this one and see if this isn't a better choice. It probably is.

Again, I don't blindly accept everything that it says on faith alone. There are a NUMBER of areas in the standard, as published, that I would have liked to have seen more Reasoning or at least a sentence or two of reasoning. Sometimes the reasoning isn't included, such as is the case in the use of whitespace for the previously mentioned keywords.

Consistency is the key to any form of programming. And this book intends to help all embedded C programmers produce consistent code!

If you are a program manager, project manager or team lead of an embedded systems project, get this book, give a copy to everyone on your team and use it ragged until your team produces consistent code. You can not go wrong using the standard supplied by this book and there are many, many ways to go wrong using some other standard or none at all.

For anyone who MUST deviate from the standard for whatever sound reasoning would have to apply, there is a section on deviation that even tells how and when to deviate. A truly useful standard SHOULD be inflexible as much as possible in this embedded systems world of ours. When we "bend the rules" we take on more risk and we discard the lessons learned by the many who have come before us.

The book is not an exhaustive representation of standards for C programming, rather, it is a concise, mostly explicit standard for embedded C programmers. If the sheer weight of a volume suggests its value, this probably won't live up to your girth requirements. At something under 100 pages, it, like embedded software should, gets right to the point, stays on target and gets out cleanly. I'd probably advise the inclusion of an index, but it isn't really that challenging to find the topics of interest by flipping through the pages via the manual scan method.

The book is very clear on a wide variety of conventions, including many largely considered stylistic or a matter of convention that will (that's WILL) differ from what you may be used to seeing in code. If that is going to bother you, you may want to remain happily ignorant of the value brought to the table by this book. However, if you're seeking a suitable, useful coding standard for hardcore embedded systems programming in C, look no further.

I'd like to see this standard adopted by EE programs, but that would suggest that more than a single semester of C would be part of the curricula. You can help in your department by bringing it to the right audience. The potential for reducing and perhaps someday eliminating embedded systems bugs is on the horizon!
